About

Designed by Dietitians is an Australian supplement brand that has recently released a range of evidenced based protein powders named Nourish.

Designed by Dietitians is owned by Accredited Practising Dietitians Leanne Ward and Susie Burrell (the hosts of The Nutrition Couch Podcast).

As clinical dietitians, Susie and Leanne struggled to find protein powders on the market that they approved of nutritionally and could recommend to their clients.

To address this need, they have developed their own expertly formulated protein blends in their Nourish range.

The Nourish range took Leanne and Susie an entire year to develop and they are so proud of the evidence-based nutrients included in the blends as well as how good they actually taste!

If you have any questions about the blends, please see our FAQ section.

FAQs

As one of the 3 key macronutrients, protein is primarily found in animal-based foods including dairy, meat, eggs, fish as well as in smaller quantities in nuts, seeds and legumes. Unlike carbohydrate, the body requires a certain amount of protein each day to function optimally. Protein has many functions in the body including helping to make new cells, for muscle growth and repair, to build connective tissue including skin and bone, to carry oxygen around the body and to make the enzymes that digest food.

The average female needs at least 1g of good quality protein for every kilo of body weight. We base this on your healthy weight, and the average female will require a minimum of 50-70g and up to 80-100g depending on your individual goals. It is recommended that those that are aiming for fat loss, aiming to build muscle or in peri or menopause, consume slightly more protein than the average person. Most women do not reach their daily protein intake for several reasons, including grabbing carbohydrate rich meals and snacks on the run, skipping meals, choosing plant-based milks over dairy and eating quick, low-protein meals such as cereals or toasties.

Protein powder like Nourish is a concentrated source of milk-based protein, and an option to get a concentrated amount of high-quality protein in a small amount of food. Most women don’t eat enough protein at breakfast or lunch and a serve of protein powder, particularly at breakfast can help them achieve their overall protein requirements for the day. A serve of protein powder is an easy and convenient way to get 20+g of protein in a single serve, but it can also be enjoyed as part of a recipe eg. in a smoothie, oat-based recipe like overnight oats or added to baking.

Good quality protein is a description given to mostly animal-based proteins including dairy, meat, eggs, fish, chicken, tofu and legumes that offers a full range of amino acids, the building blocks of protein, and as such is more readily metabolised in the body. Nourish protein is based on 100% Whey protein, a low lactose, high quality, complete protein.

Indeed, you can. In the case of protein, it still is a source of calories so you can have too much and more is not always better. It is recommended that adults do not consume more than 2-3g of protein per kilogram of healthy body weight each day for any extended period of time.

Nourish is a whey (dairy) based protein with a small amount of key nutrients added to optimise health. In Nourish Protein with Pre and Probiotic, there is an 89% high quality Whey Protein Isolate Base, along with some dietary fibre (acacia gum), natural flavour, salt, natural sweetener (Steviol glycosides) and probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus).

Nourish Women’s Protein is 83% high quality Whey Protein, along with inositol, calcium, chromium, salt, natural sweetener (Steviol glycosides) and activated folate, the extra nutrients specifically added to target women’s hormonal needs.

Nourish Women’s Protein best suits adult women who:

  • have PCOS, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes or other hormonal conditions; or
  • have more than 10kg to lose; or
  • are in perimenopause or menopause.

Nourish Protein with Pre and Probiotics best suits adult women, or men, who:

  • actively care for their gut health; or
  • have autoimmune conditions (because autoimmune conditions are generally linked back to poor gut health); or
  • have sensitive tummies; or
  • are otherwise just busy, active and healthy individuals.

Nourish Women’s Protein has been specifically formulated for women’s hormones.

Nourish Protein with Pre and Probiotics is appropriate for both women and men.

Yes, for the moment as we find vanilla the most versatile flavour. Later this year, we hope we bring out a chocolate flavour as well.

No, both protein powders contain dairy from the whey protein. In the future we hope to be able to create a vegan based protein too.

Yes. Both protein powders are gluten free and batch testing has been conducted on each blend. They are safe for people with Coeliac disease and gluten intolerance.

Both protein blends are low lactose. They should be tolerated well by most healthy adults, even those who struggle with dairy or have a lactose intolerance.

Yes. Both protein blends are well suited for diabetes (as they are low carb and low sugar). However, the Women’s Protein was developed specifically for type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. So, if you have either of those conditions, we recommend the Women’s Protein (unless pregnant or breastfeeding).

The Women’s Protein blend is not appropriate for pregnancy or breastfeeding. The Protein with Pre and Probiotics should be fine for healthy women/healthy pregnancies (but always check with your health care professional).

We recommend always checking with your health care professional first.

No. Children do not need additional protein like some adults do. If there is a medical need for increased protein in your child’s diet, please speak with your health care professional.

No. We choose not to include a plastic scoop in our bags of protein powder as we didn’t want to contribute to more plastic in the environment. If you don’t have kitchen scales at home, a 30g serve is roughly 2 tablespoons.
